As for materials, i looked at using metal to create the zip, as this would widen my knowlege in to metal craft, and workshop skills. I looked at local metal supplys:

Construction/ fabrication techniques
Here i looked at at a wide variety of techniques.
Moulding and casting processes
-Chemical prices and supplier
-Hard or soft mould
-Seam lines
- Model preparation
-Mould releases/undercuts
-Safety considerations
-Material finish/quality
To help me answer many of these questions I have researched in books and DVDs, and websites such as:

TECHNICAL Research…. The hit list!
This is just a brain storm of topics to research to achieve the best finish results.
Materials Considerations
Woods, metal, plastic, fabrics, pins, string. I have to consider what was available to the Borrowers as they adapted many items to use for a different function or purpose. Such as thimbles were used as pots and pans. Using materials which I wouldn’t usually consider, or to mimic them and their imperfections, such as string, razor bladed would have been used as knifes. Clothing would have been mainly made out of lighter fabrics, to allow the ease of movement, and avoid the weigh of the fabrics.
Products
House hold materials/items
-Item properties-strengths/weaknesses. A paper clip/ or tooth pick was used a s a climbing tool
-Construction techniques available to ‘borrowers’ would use simple methods, as did not have the use of machinery obviously!
-Machining and construction skills limited
-Weight restrictions, must I mimic this accurately in to the prop model? Is this a priority?
-Size restrictions. Must chose and make a prop that was available to the borrowers. For example can’t make a TV, as this in borrowers scale would be gigantic. May be considering making a variety of small props. Which were used, such as pin, keys…
-Storage. Available to them, and what was scavanagible
-Construction of their clothes. Used basic techniques, and used light flexible fabrics such as silk
-Adaptations to habitat, normal hiking gear in places would have been inappropriate as the characters were mainly climbing up shiny polished, slippery surfaces, such as kitchen appliances. Would need to adapt to this by using appropriate objects which were available to the Borrowers and suitable to the purpose such as springs, suckers, pegs used as a swing,
